College Financial Aid Offer Decoder: Methodology
Understand the approach, what your result can tell you, and where judgment still matters.
Current tool · Version 1.1.4
Separate the price from ways to pay it
The Decoder subtracts grants and scholarships from the school-reported cost of attendance. Work opportunities and loans appear separately. Your additional costs and chosen funding amounts remain visible.
Reading your first-year cost
Net price is the cost before work or borrowing. The funding balance shows what remains after the resources and net loan proceeds you selected. Entering a loan offer does not accept it or reduce the price. The renewal breakdown and next questions identify facts to confirm with the financial aid office.
Current manual-entry assumptions
Blank amounts are unknown, not zero. An incomplete grant list cannot establish a net price. Semester amounts require an explicit number of covered terms. Renewal labels describe the entered offer; they do not guarantee future aid.
The first-year analysis uses your entered cost and award facts. If you skip optional funding, no savings, earnings, household cash or borrowing are selected. If you select loans, missing fees leave net proceeds and the remaining balance unknown.
Review the entries before saving. Updating an offer creates a new analysis and preserves earlier saved inputs and conclusions.
Saved comparisons preserve original offers and assumptions. Cost differences compare nominal adjusted prices; borrowing stays separate. The additional-gift threshold assumes the same usable extra gift in every year, including year one, without displacing existing aid. A missing amount or a year unable to absorb that gift prevents an unsupported threshold.

A result you can revisit
This page describes the current tool. An older saved result may use an earlier approach; its saved version and conclusions remain unchanged. Reviewing your answers and completing an updated run creates a new result without rewriting the earlier one.
